African Fiction is the name under which Irish musician and producer Chris Somers creates and performs electronic music. While producing across an array of styles the common denominator in his work is the sinister feeling he evokes through the use of dark textures, frayed melodies and abrasive rhythms. Live performances are largely improvised utilising an array of hardware, instruments and vocals to take the audience from the pounding rhythms of the floor to the cavernous reverbs of a black hole and many abstractions in between. He is the first artist in residence at Cork’s recently relocated Sample Studios where he has begun work on a conceptual experimental electronic piece exploring identity as imposed by the self. He is also the composer and sound designer for 'Spliced'; a new theatre piece by Timmy Creed that had a sell out run at this years Dublin Fringe Festival.

African Fictions's debut release 'Heat' (released October 9th) is the culmination of a year spent exploring and experimenting within the techno form. The track hones influences that span from Pink Floyd to Powell and from Badalamenti to Blawan into a nine minute micro-symphony in three movements that charts the dogged pursuit of inane temporal pleasure (casual sex). The song was constructed from edits of long improvised passages and samples made using a then recently acquired synthesiser to create a sonic palette of industrial noise, banging bass lines and cosmic leads. The accompanying video was shot, directed and edited by long time friend and collaborator, visual artist David Mathúna.
