Exalted love, flying horses, a ring of fire, and a poignant farewell.
Wagner’s Die Walküre is the second of the four-opera series known as The Ring. The Valkyrie Brünnhilde is the favorite daughter of Wotan, head of the gods. A Valkyrie is a goddess who chooses who will die in battle, and who will live. But Wotan has reluctantly promised his wife Fricka that his beloved son Siegmund must die. Brünnhilde, seeing Wotan’s true feelings, disobeys him. She is the daughter who knows Wotan’s heart better that Wotan knows it himself. Wotan has no choice but to punish Brünnhilde. He turns her into a mortal woman and surrounds her on Valkyrie Rock with magic fire. There she will sleep until a fearless hero can pass through the flames. The talk will conclude with a discussion of the mythic origins of Wagner’s characters. San Francisco Opera will be performing the complete Ring Cycle between June 12 and July 1, 2018.
