SATURDAY SEPT. 23, 2017 - 11 am -1 pm - Son House said that Robert Johnson must have sold his soul to the devil to learn to play guitar the way he did; Scott Ainslie's workshop offers a good alternative!

One of the distinctive things about the playing of Robert Johnson that set him apart from his contemporaries was that he borrowed a "blues shuffle" from the piano and became self-sufficient as a song/dance accompanist. In his ability to take up and abandon a bass part, hopping to other figures on the guitar to outline the harmonies or to respond to the vocals with a lead figure, Johnson's guitar style contains all three guitar "jobs" of a rock or blues band: bass, rhythm, and lead.

In this guitar workshop, Johnson expert and acoustic blues singer/guitarist Scott Ainslie will be walking students through Johnson's work with an eye to learning to juggle these elements in any solo guitar accompaniment, blues or not.

The musicality of the precedents that Johnson established give guitarists a solid, rootsy foundation to build on.

This workshop will help you get a handle on some blues chord forms, standard and open tuning slide guitar, and will help you move up the neck of the guitar and have figures and chords there to highlight a vocal line, create an instrumental break, or vary the accompaniment to shift the emotions of a verse or bridge.
