When Arundhati Roy’s debut novel, The God of Small Things, was published in 1997, it was awarded the prestigious Booker Prize, became an international bestseller, and is now considered a classic of modern literature. As a part of her international book tour, Roy returns to Vancouver with her richly moving second novel, written twenty years after the first.

The Ministry of Utmost Happiness gives us a glorious cast of unforgettable characters, caught up in the tide of history, each in search of a place of safety. Its heroes, both present and departed, human as well as animal, have been broken by the world we live in, and then mended by love. And for this reason they will never surrender. Humane and sensuous, beautifully told, this extraordinary novel demonstrates on every page the miracle of Arundhati Roy's storytelling gifts.
